Day 3 – Back to Blighty!
The day started out very promising today with nice weather and 15 miles of SMOOTH fast cycle track out of Etaples heading towards Boulogne. But as we were on a dead line for the ferry something was due to go wrong! We then turned off the main routes and the route became a little more uneven and twisty. Culminating in us climbing (UNNECESSARILY) the steepest hill in the world – for which Neil is extremely apologetic.
After the curses subsided we headed into Boulogne where our luck got worse again when I took a heavy tumble, banging my head (thank god for helmets!) and cutting my leg quite badly. A few bandages later off we headed again. Steve also had a problem when he damaged a wheel. After much contemplating we decided to use the rear wheel of the spare bike until we got to UK where we could get it fixed! Steve however was more than happy to point out that he though the was going to look silly with different wheels until it was pointed out to him by Sandy that a short fat man in Lycra riding bike was silly enough!
Unfortunately these delays meant we missed our train back but Eurotunnel were very helpful and were able to get us aboard the next train out!
30 minutes later we were in Etchinghill, Kent starting the last 40 miles to Coldblow Farm, Thurnham for fish and chips and a well earned beer! The route we took was not the most pituresque – the A20 never is, and once off the A20 it didn’t really improve too much as we had to pass the Worlds Steepest hill (no really this time!).
Anyway we have had our fish and chips and are settling in for a little lite refreshment before the final leg tomorrow!
Thanks for all you messages of support, keep them coming and reind people to keep sponsoring us!!!!!
